The Four Pillars of Christian Contemplation
To distinguish from Eastern meditation, I will call this practice "Reformed Contemplation." As seen in many traditions, there is always a space for silence—to be, not to do. And how can we be without the Lord? I give you this guide, as a form of note to me and to you. Never shy away from the Lord’s path. How can we contemplate the King of the universe? On the surface of the first pillar it’s written:
LECTIO | Reading
You should pick a small verse and read it three times out loud. Slowly at first, you read and understand its context. In the second read, you feel the text, and in the third, you think: which part stands out to you? Submit to the text. What are the Scriptures saying? Be faithful to its context! Do not create illusions.
MEDITATIO | Meditation on the Word
Contemplate the words and literary figures. Ask yourself: Why this verse? How could this be applied in my life? How do I understand these comparisons?
ORATIO | Prayer
Transform your reflections into prayer. Use comparisons you read in the Bible and compose your prayers, speaking freely with the Lord.
CONTEMPLATIO | Contemplation
Be silent for 1/2 to 3 minutes. Do not think of anything new. Rest your mind on the power of Christ and his promises.
