The Four Pillars of Christian Contemplation
Reformed Contemplation Guide
To distinguish from Eastern meditation, I call this practice "Reformed Contemplation." There is always space for silence—to be, not to do. How can we be without the Lord? This guide serves as a note to me and to you. Never shy away from the Lord's path.
How can we contemplate the King of the universe?
1. LECTIO
Reading
Pick a small verse and read it three times out loud. Slowly at first, understand its context. Second reading: feel the text. Third: which part stands out? Submit to the text. Be faithful to its context—do not create illusions.
2. MEDITATIO
Meditation on the WordContemplate the words and literary figures. Ask: Why this verse? How could this be applied in my life? How do I understand these comparisons?
3. ORATIO
Prayer
Transform your reflections into prayer. Use biblical comparisons and compose freely, speaking with the Lord.
4. CONTEMPLATIO
Contemplation
Be silent for ½ to 3 minutes. Do not think of anything new. Rest your mind on Christ's power and promises.
